Tom Sachs, local builder, died Sept. 9

Thomas William Sachs, a custom-home builder in Vail, San Diego and Guntersville, Ala., died at his home in Guntersville on Sept. 9 after a six-year battle with cancer. He was 63.

Sachs was born on June 29, 1943, in Rockford, Ill., the son of Theodore L. and Jane Clark Sachs. He graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, with a degree in marketing.As a Marine Corps reservist, his unit was to be shipped to Vietnam, and he went to Colorado to wait for his orders. In Vail, he met Milla McCord of Guntersville, and they were soon married.

Their son Cord was born in Vail and four years later, their daughter, Tegan, was born in California. The couple was married for 35 years. While living on the West Coast, Sachs became a Christian, which changed his entire life, purpose and the way he did business, family members said. Sachs is survived by his wife, Milla Sachs; son Cord Sachs (Heather); daughter Tegan Corrie (David); brothers Ted Sachs (Janne) and Bob Sachs; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Stephen “Skipper” Sachs.Memorial donations can be to the ministries of the Church Resource Ministries – Romania, in care of First Baptist Church of Guntersville, Ala., or to the Hospice of Marshall County, Albertville, Ala.
